"Numerous musicians from The Altered State were featured performers at this [The Woody Guthrie]
Festival, and still more played the official Open Mic. Some of them that
your NF reporter was able to catch up with included:
The Conway-based Happenstance electric folk trio consisting of Dan Clanton on guitar and vocals, Doug Coppock on guitar and vocals, and Brooks Walthall on bass and vocals, turned in a beautifully put-together set at the Brick Street Cafe official Festival venue. Included was Clanton’s Hard Way To Go, Red Hot Lovers and I Can Run; Coppock’s Stranger In A Dream, Time, and Not Guilty; and Walthall’s Southern Belles, all from their 2005 CD “Happenstance.” Their WG song Deportee was lavishly arranged, with trading off leads, English and Spanish verses and three-part harmony on the chorus. They were also invited to perform an additional set at Brick Street when rain forced the large and well-attended Friday night show inside."

"It's a good album, good songs, and a lot of very spirited good energy.
I like the fact that so many of the songs have positive things to say about love,
and long time relationships, and overcoming obstacles,
and all the other good and edifying observations you guys have made."
- Steve Gillette Singer-Songwriter Darcy Farrow, et al
"Happenstance is a real team of a band. Everyone works together to spin their
parts into recordings and performances that slip over you like long lost flannel
shirts. These guys are somehow both fresh and familiar, and their warm
harmonies and tight playing go down easy."
- Tom Kimmel Singer-Songwriter Nashville TN
"Happenstance is a Southern-fried Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Three veteran Arkansas folksingers combine their songs and voices
for a whole that's even greater than its talented parts."
- Steve Brooks Singer-Songwriter Frog Records, Austin, Texas
"I really have enjoyed it. You guys really do make a good team and your stuff all fits."
- Johnsmith Singer-Songwriter
"I love the CD! It's one of the very few CDs I can pop into the player and leave alone -- all 11 cuts are excellent. Technically, it's flawless.
- Jim Dirden Noted Freelance Photographer and Music Lover
"A highly entertaining trio with delightful energy providing close harmony and skillful musicianship. Our audience praised their performance and are eager for their return." - Bruce Boldt, President Prairie Wind Folk Showcase
"It's no happenstance that this is a great CD. These three guys are each great musicians and songwriters. These are songs that you can't get out of your head after you hear them. Great harmony in a perfect blend of big talent." - Scott McCarley, The Mixed Review and Texas Outlaw Music Festival
" I really enjoyed (the Happenstance CD). Nice mix of styles. Real songs by and about real people, produced the way an acoustic record should be produced. A little sweetening here and there but always in the service of the song and the singer. I get a feeling after listening that I
know these guys. Oh, wait. I DO know these guys. And they're really nice. And they've made a really nice record. So buy it.".
- Eric Schwartz Singer-Songwriter
"(This CD has) an honesty of intent that is rare these days. You can just feel how much
fun they're are having. It comes shining right through in every song.
Nice production, chemistry and very nice lead work."
- Still on the Hill (Donna and Kelly) Singer-Songwriters, Acoustic Roots Based Folk
"I was delighted with (the CD). Found myself smiling and agreeing with the stories - then
thinking 'I need to cover some of these tunes'".
- Jack Motley Singer-Songwriter, kerrvert, and host of the campfires at 'Camp On This' as well as the occasional House Concert in Edna Texas)
"This (CD) is a lot of fun. It's just plain good music, nice harmonies,
snappy melodies, lyrics that make sense, and a consistently upbeat message."
- Peter Read 'Nightflying' Spring, 2005 edition
"They just happen to be Good Folks, have Good Fun and play Good music with some smooth sailing harmonies. That's just Happenstance!"
-David Walls (O Susanna Concerts, Blytheville AR)
